Municipalities

Using your traffic light data to achieve public benefits — including fewer accidents at intersections

Challenges Facing The Field

Municipalities are charged with maximizing safety, efficiency, and mobility, with providing enhanced services, and with improving citizens’ quality of life — all with limited financial and personnel resources.

Impacts & Opportunities

Connected Signals works closely with cities as a true partner — striving to work in the city’s best interest. Our primary goal is to maximize the benefit of the city’s data by providing solutions that:

  • Improve driver safety
  • Reduce intersection accidents
  • Increase fuel efficiency
  • Reduce pollution/carbon emissions

By connecting your Traffic Management Systems to Connected Signals, you also gain unique tools and insights that let you:

  • Eliminate the complexities of securely gathering real-time signal data and making it easily available in an industry-standard format
  • Improve traffic flow
  • Identify intersections with high incidences of red-light running
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of signal timing, including green-wave timing, based on unbiased data on vehicle/signal behavior
  • Report frequency of arrival at red lights
  • Rebroadcast data to third parties at no cost
  • Optimize signal timing using vehicle/signal data

Easily Implemented In Your City

Unlike other connected-vehicle initiatives, our approach uses your existing infrastructure, requiring neither costly municipal infrastructure investments nor the addition of dedicated hardware to every vehicle and signalized intersection. By comparison, the USDoT’s Dedicated Short-Range Communications program will require billions of dollars (on the order of $20K/intersection) and years to implement; most of the expected benefits won’t be realized until there is very substantial coverage of both vehicles and intersections.

With Connected Signals, there is no waiting. These benefits can begin accruing in your city today!

V2If Signal Feed Appliance

Connected Signals offers a free hardware solution to municipalities wishing to provide their data to us. V2If is a small device, about the size of a pack of cards, that allows municipalities to securely and easily distribute real-time traffic signal data to selected third parties of their choosing. V2If uses two Ethernet ports to preserve network security. One port plugs into the switch that connects cities to their traffic lights, while the other connects to the outside world. As a municipality, you retain control of your data and its distribution.
